Promoting Fundamental British Values at Little Digmoor
At Little Digmoor, British Values are embedded into every aspect of our daily curriculum. The 5 categories of fundamental British values, as set out in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

Democracy
Democracy is an essential part of our school. We ensure that all pupils have their voices heard and are aware of their rights and responsibilities. We provide opportunities for this via:

  • Well established School and Eco Councils – new councillors are elected and voted in by the children, termly.
  • Weekly Pupil Voice assemblies - led by our School and Eco Councils.
  • Pupil questionnaires.
  • Participation in the Pupil Parliament scheme ran by SHARES Lancashire.

The Rule of Law
Rules are essential in order to provide a happy, safe and secure environment for all pupils. At Little Digmoor, children are taught the value and reasons behind laws from the earliest age. They understand that rules govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences that follow when laws are broken. Our school rules are reinforced and revisited regularly both in the classroom and in our school assemblies. Additionally, visits from authorities such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance services are regular parts of our calendar and help us to reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate, and provide boundaries, for young pupils to make choices safely through an empowering education. We actively use the curriculum to promote this. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand, and exercise their rights and personal freedoms. They are taught how to do this safely through PSHE, RE, SRE and e-Safety lessons, along with weekly spiritual, moral, social and culture (SMSC) assemblies. Additionally, children make regular choices about their education and wider school life such as after school clubs and school dinners etc. through our School and Eco Councils and weekly Pupil Voice assemblies.

Mutual Respect
Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around teaching values such as respect. Children are taught about the importance of having respect for themselves and having mutual respect for others. They are taught about discrimination, stereotyping and and prejudice and the damning effects that this can have on people and communities. Mutual respect is embedded in all areas of our curriculum but is revisited regularly throughout PSHE and RE lessons and weekly SMSC assemblies.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
In modern Britain, tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs has never been more important. This is a prevalent topic which we see and hear about on the news almost daily. At Little Digmoor we are proud to have a diverse range of pupils who all have different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs. We have children from all over the world, many of whom are multilingual. Tolerance of others plays a huge role in our day-to-day life at Little Digmoor, and we do not stand for any forms of bullying, racism, prejudice or other hate crimes.

In order to promote tolerance, we are proud to celebrate many different cultures and beliefs, focusing on special festivials, celebrations and traditions. We aim to enhance children’s learning by having regular diverse members of the community visit us at school. We ensure to give children opportunities to experience culturally diverse locations in society such as places of worship. Tolerance is taught throughout our broad and balanced curriculum; children have access to a range of culturally diverse texts and are taught about contemporary issues such as black history and LGBTQ+ communities.

Additionally, we are extremely proud to offer a bilingual club which is a safe space for bilingual children to explore and celebrate their heritage and cultures.
