The Aims of the Mathematics National Curriculum

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

In Mathematics lessons at Little Digmoor Primary School, we intent to:-

  • Empower children to have a confident and resilient attitude towards Mathematics.
  • Enable children to talk enthusiastically about Mathematics and understand the importance of the subject in everyday life.
  • Provide children with opportunities to develop effective thinking, reasoning and explanation skills to prepare them for the future.
  • Encourage children to be inquisitive learners who can successfully work individually and in collaboration with others.
  • Enable children to persevere and solve challenging problems applying their fluency and reasoning skills.

Implementation

We implement the EYFS Framework and the Programmes of Study for the National Curriculum in Key Stage One and Two.

At Little Digmoor Primary School we embrace the Mastery approach to teaching mathematics. Our teachers will ensure that mathematical skills are taught every day following the White Rose Mastery Programme. They also use cross curricular opportunities to develop pupils’ mathematical fluency. Our pupils understand the importance of mathematics, are encouraged to be confident in numeracy and to apply the skills to any given situation.

Lessons begin with a short, fast-paced numeracy session linked to the ‘High Value Targets’ of that year group.

We build on previous learning and skills in a step by step and progressive sequence whilst encouraging the use of mathematical language throughout. A wide range of representations and variations are used to truly embed children’s knowledge and understanding. Children’s work will include constant opportunities for them to think critically and logically, reason and tackle challenges.

To further develop our pupils’ times table fluency we have enrolled all children to Times Table Rockstars. We sometimes provide additional teaching support for children with special educational needs through a discrete teaching group. All year groups provide keep-up fast-paced interventions in order to support pupils who may have found work too challenging.

Impact

Teachers assess the impact of the mathematics curriculum and chosen programme of study by using the following strategies:

  • Rigorously monitoring and evaluating mathematics across the school from early years to year 6.
  • Teacher assessments using Lancashire year group KLIPs (these can be found in a separate document).
  • White Rose end of unit assessments.
  • Statutory Multiplication Tables Check (Year 4).
  • Early Learning Goals (EYFS).
  • KS1 statutory tests (Year 2).
  • KS2 statutory tests (Year 6)
